Guiding gun control legislation in Côte d'Ivoire is the Law 98 749 of 23 December 1998 governing the repression of violations of the regulation on arms, ammunition and explosive material, the Decree No. 99 183 of 24 February 1999 regulating arms and ammunition and the Decree No. 2009 154 of 30 April 2009 governing the creation, organisation, functions and functioning of the National Commission on the fight against the proliferation and illicit trade in small arms and light weapons9

African Union

In June 2006, as a member of the African Union, Côte d'Ivoire adopted an African Common Position to take to the Conference to Review the UN Programme of Action to Prevent, Combat and Eradicate the Illicit Trade in Small Arms and Light Weapons in All Its Aspects (UNPoA), held in June 200615

Economic Community of West African States

In June 2006, as a member of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Côte d'Ivoire adopted the ECOWAS Convention on Small Arms and Light Weapons, their Ammunition and other Related Materials. This stipulates strict controls on the transfer, manufacture, possession and security of small arms and light weapons16

United Nations Arms Trade Treaty

In 2009, Côte d'Ivoire voted to begin17 negotiations towards a legally binding Arms Trade Treaty. In this vote, 151 UN Member States supported talks on an ATT, with 1 voting against, 20 abstentions, and 20 non-votes

United Nations Firearms Protocol
