Gun maker's chairman has criminal past

13 February 2004

Associated Press

The new board chairman of Smith & Wesson Holding Corp., the parent company of the famous gun maker, has offered to resign after reports surfaced about his criminal past. James Joseph Minder, 74, spent time behind bars during the 1950s and 1960s for a string of armed robberies and an attempted prison escape in Michigan. Armed Politicians Common in PNG, But Not in Other Countries

13 February 2004

Post-Courier (Port Moresby), Editorial

Packing a pistol in your briefcase to go to work may be run-of-the-mill behaviour for leading public servants and politicians in Papua New Guinea. But it is certainly heart-stopping stuff in many other countries. The news that a banking executive barely days in the top job had a pistol in his hand luggage on an Air Niugini flight to Singapore is a blow to our national credibility. Whether the executive knew of it, or his well-meaning wife packed it without his... (GunPolicy.org)
