Handgun Buyback 'Shambolic'

The Federal Government last night vowed to go ahead with its handgun buyback in Victoria from Tuesday despite the scheme being delayed until October in New South Wales and South Australia.
Justice Minister Chris Ellison also revealed that about 4000 types of firearms would be banned, a significant upgrading from the previous estimate of 500.

The Government's $87 million buy-back of newly outlawed handguns was tonight given the go ahead by the Senate to begin next week.
The states and territories agreed to tighten gun laws after two people were shot dead at Monash University in October last year.
The states will ban a range of small handguns, handguns with a calibre above .38 and those with a magazine capacity exceeding 10 rounds.

A divided appeals court Tuesday dealt another blow to Attorney General Eliot Spitzer's lawsuit against the gun industry for marketing tactics that allegedly contribute to gun crimes, saying a trial court had properly dismissed the suit.
