1.2 Illicit Trafficking

The trafficking of illegal arms nationwide is characterised by the following:

- Links to international organised crime.

- Utilisation of diverse geography (large borders) and routes of transportation (land, sea, rivers, lakes and air).

- The increase in crime leads to theft and/or loss of firearms and ammunition from individuals, the Armed Forces (FFAA) and the PNP.

- Attacks on commercial property, attacks on FFO facilities or losses incurred in the fighting against common criminals (DDCC) and delinquent terrorists (DDTT).

- High prices paid in the illegal market for material used in war. To get an idea of the value, it is estimated that on the border area from other countries it costs up to $3 per rifle cartridge (mainly 7.62 x 39 mm ammunition), $100 for hand grenades or grenade launchers, $1,000 for each rocket for an RPG rocket launcher and $5,000 for each assault rifle.

[FFAA = Armed Forces; PNP = Peruvian National Police; DDCC = Common Criminals; DDTT = Delinquent Criminals]
