Según el Gobierno, hay aproximadamente 400.000 armas registradas en el país. Se estima que hay 1.6 millones de armas en circulación - más de un arma por cada diez habitantes.

Cerca del 80% de homicidios en Guatemala son cometidos con armas de fuego. En el 2009, se registraron más de 5.300 homicidios. Un alto número de mujeres (722) y niños (591) estuvieron entre las víctimas.

UNODC helps Guatemala in the Fight against Organised Crime

As a first symbolic step in implementing the program on crime in Guatemala, Mr. Costa and President Colom witnessed the destruction of more than 6,000 illegal firearms.

According to the Government, there are approximately 400,000 registered guns in the country. There are an estimated 1.6 million guns in circulation, more than one gun for every ten inhabitants.

About 80% of homicides in Guatemala are committed with firearms. In 2009, there were more than 5,300 homicides. A high number of women (722) and children (591) were among the victims.
