Institutional capacities and disarmament initiatives

On 4 May 2005, President Ndayizeye signed a decree (no. 100/061) marking the start of a civilian disarmament campaign.

This decree applied to 'young members of the Peace Guardians and […] any other person holding firearms for the purposes of civil self-defence; armed civilians in possession of a firearms licence; persons who are illegally armed' (Republic of Burundi, 2005, article 2).
