SALW Safekeeping and Handling Management and Security

The small arms and light weapons owned by the Ministry of Defence and the General Staff of the Army of Serbia and Montenegro are kept in standardized depots. Assignment units are charged with safekeeping and maintenance and the security of those arms and weapons is high. The depots are sentinelled, sealed and/or additionally secured by padlocks and lit. Security measures, including fire, lightning and blast protection, are applied strictly. All depot items are catalogued, the depot threat level is assessed and the plan of security measures and procedures is updated on a regular basis.

The small arms and light weapons owned by the Ministries of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro are kept in standardized depots, too. Their management, safekeeping and storage is coordinated by responsible personnel, while, due to the lack of appropriate facilities, arrangements are often made between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministries of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Montenegro to keep them in military depots. Detailed records are kept on the arrangements and strict security measures are provided.

No attempt at violation of safekeeping regulations or theft has been registered so far, which provides eloquent evidence of the level of security maintained. The depots are inspected regularly and internal control measures are applied daily, monthly, annually according to unit plans.
