i) What national standards for security

Regarding the administrating and the safety of weapons and ammunition, the Ministry of Defence implements and respects the rules and the proper legislation, conducting inspections and verifications at different levels from time to time.

Elements considered when deciding on national stockpile location are as follows:

- Mission and task operations
- The distance of the stockpile location from the inhabitant areas;
- National road network

The stockpile security issues are defined on the armaments and ammunitions regulation book of the Ministry of Defence. The safety measures required for storage buildings are foreseen and designed by the Defence Designed Institute.

The armaments and ammunitions regulation book of the Ministry of Defence provides rules on inspections to verify that the storage buildings fulfil the requirements. There is a national policy on centralization of the locations for storage buildings, based on the long term Armed Forces restructuring plan.

In 1997 there have been 167 ammunitions storage sites with some 917 storage buildings. In 2002 these figure have been reduced down to 87 storage sites with some 606 storage buildings.
