Production of Firearms for Registration

5. Every officer to whom any firearm is surrendered shall satisfy himself that such firearm1 has engraved or otherwise clearly marked upon it a distinguishing mark or number and, in the absence of such distinguishing mark or number, shall himself engrave or mark, or cause to be engraved or marked, thereon a distinguishing mark or number.
