Crime in SA

Graph 1 summarizes national crime statistics for murder and attempted murder for 1 January to 31 March over five years. As shown, both of these crimes (which represent the most extreme forms of violent crime) have risen in the past five years. While SAPS, disappointingly, has not provided information on the weapon used in crimes since 2020-21, annual statistics for the financial years 2017-18 to 2019-20 show that these crimes most often involve firearms; Graph 2 charts the most common weapon used to commit murder for these three years.
