[T]rying to get any basic guns statistics in Australia is like trying to pull teeth. No one seems to know exactly how many legal guns there are, or how many licensed gun owners. Put together the patchy figures from all the state gun registries and it looks as if there are at least 2.7 million registered guns in the country.

The national police information sharing service, CrimTrac, says it has 4.3 million registered guns on its database. But it can't say much more about it than that. That's because the country's gun statistics are in a mess…
