What changes to import regulations came into effect on 20 December 2002?

In line with the decision of the Council of Australian Governments (COAG) to prohibit the importation and possession of certain semi-automatic handguns and handgun parts by sporting shooters amendments to the Customs (Prohibited Imports) Regulations 1956 became effective on 20 December 2002.

The amendments also place related conditions on the disposal of newly imported handguns by firearm dealers to sporting shooters.
