Nicaragua: 4.4 per 100,000

Official homicide data is tough to come by in Nicaragua. However, a statistical approximation from security expert Elvira Cuadra documented 261 first-degree murder cases reported in 2020 with a total of 291 victims. Thus, InSight Crime projected the country's murder rate to be at least 4.4 per 100,000 based on population estimates. That said, this is only partial data. Under Nicaraguan law, first-degree murders are classified as their own crimes separate from other homicides, suggesting that the total number of victims is likely higher.

"In Nicaragua, lethal violence continues, is persistent and shows an increasing trend … 19 murders were registered per month in the first six months and the violence is spreading to rural and urban areas," Cuadra told local media last year.

Since nation-wide protests took off in 2018, the government of President Daniel Ortega has cracked down hard, repressing those in the opposition and relying on paramilitary groups to sow fear. All of this has increased the chances of more violence in the years to come, according to Cuadra.
