Secondo l'OPAL, Osservatorio permanente sulle Armi Leggere e Politiche di Sicurezza e Difesa, nel 2020 a fronte di 93 omicidi di donne, 23 sono stati commessi da legali detentori di armi o con armi da loro detenute. Si tratta di un omicidio su quattro. Un dato impressionante se messo in rapporto al numero di chi possiede una licenza per armi: meno del 10% degli italiani.

Numeri calcolati dall'associazione perché non esistono registri ufficiali. Manca infatti un censimento delle licenze e delle armi legalmente detenute (le stime delle licenze, compreso il nulla osta, variano dai 3 ai 4 milioni e quelle delle armi regolarmente detenute da 8 a 12 milioni), che faccia emergere anche quelle ereditate o da collezione, che sono funzionanti, ma spesso senza licenza, e i dati relativi a omicidi e armi utilizzate. L'unico numero disponibile è una tabella che la polizia pubblica ogni anno, nel rapporto sugli omicidi del Dipartimento della Pubblica sicurezza: si parla di 1.266.476 licenze per il 2020.
