The figures from police records revealed that there are about 27,000 civilian firearms licensed in the country.
Record shows 22,985 civilians had shotguns, 1998 were pistol holders and 2520 had rifles.
It is widely believed a substantial amount of weapons, whether they be shotguns or automatic weapons, are illegally in the hands of Papua New Guineans around the country.
