A Maryland gun dealer was behind bars last night, charged with offences related to about 500 firearms that were found at his home… Newcastle Local Court heard.

Warren William Howard's licences to deal with firearms and dangerous weapons were suspended by NSW Police after he was arrested on Wednesday following a search of his Beauford Avenue property, the statement said.

Officers attended the home on Monday after a robbery alarm was activated and allegedly found Mr Howard, 68, under the influence of alcohol with a number of guns unsecured in the home, police said.

They returned with a search warrant on Wednesday and seized about 500 guns including pistols, rifles and shotguns, and 900 boxes of ammunition and 100 kilograms of gunpowder…

Officers allegedly found an unregistered Martini-style gun without a serial number secreted under a cloth near a cash register, eight pistols secreted in a cavity within a shelf in the garage and a 12-gauge shotgun hidden below a shelf, the statement said.

Mr Howard was charged with 14 firearms offences…

The court heard that Mr Howard had strong ties to the community and had been a lifetime member of a pistol club.
