Criminals are being armed with firearms smuggled into New Zealand by foreign shipping crews, says Police Commissioner Peter Doone.

Mr Doone said today police research had confirmed comments made by criminologist Greg Newbold about the origins of some illegal firearms…

"We believe some [firearms] come in from overseas," said Mr Doone. "That certainly is consistent with our intelligence. We don't have a huge market in New Zealand."
