Handguns from eastern Europe are entering New Zealand and ending up in the possession of gangs, according to new research.

Canterbury University sociology lecturer Greg Newbold interviewed a number of former and current criminals for yet-to-be published research on firearms and found handgun possession was increasingly common.

Mr Newbold could not give the exact details of the research until it becomes public next month but he said the sources of the handguns were sailors from eastern Europe who were able to buy guns cheaply in their home countries and sell them for a good price in New Zealand…
