America's Love Affair With Guns Shows No Sign of Waning in Texas
Sky News (UK)
30 Oct 2008
SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Texas has been synonymous with guns since cowboys had shootouts in the street, and its love affair with them shows no sign of waning. At the Bullet Hole Shooting range just outside San Antonio, enthusiasts can hire almost any sort of weapon short of a rocket launcher to take on to the range and fire. Individuals and groups of friends come here regularly to relax and let off steam -- and to practice for the forthcoming deer-hunting season, which opens next month. Gun control has not been a major issue in this election, but the National Rifle Association has done its best to shoot down Barack Obama's campaign with a series... ( gunpolicy.org )

Senseless Death of 8yr-old US Boy Firing Uzi with Dad: 'Legal, But Insane'
Boston Globe, Editorial
30 Oct 2008
Eight-year-old Christopher Bizilj, who accidentally shot himself to death Sunday with an automatic Micro Uzi, is a tragic example of how something can be legal and still insane. Christopher was taken by his father to an annual machine gun shoot at the Westfield Sportsman's Club. According to advertising for the event, no minimum age and no licenses were required to shoot machine guns at pumpkins and "other fun stuff we can't print here." The advertisement boasted, "It's all legal and fun. You will be accompanied to the firing line with a Certified Instructor to guide you. But You Are In Control -- FULL AUTO ROCK & ROLL." But Christopher, who had been... ( gunpolicy.org )

Sportsmen for Obama Shoot, Discuss Gun Politics in Wisconsin
Lake County News Chronicle (Minnesota), Opinion
30 Oct 2008
Like other sportsmen I get frustrated when I hear individuals suggest that "the Democrats are going to take away our guns." After spending a career as a fisheries research scientist and in teaching, I've come to believe it is typically the other political party that limits investment in natural resource programs essential to the future of sport fishing and hunting. As a result, I asked several individuals who enjoy guns, shooting and hunting to join me recently in a sporting clays shoot at the Old Fort Douglas Shooting Range just south of Superior, to shoot and talk about the Second Amendment, hunting and fishing. John Eaton, a retired Environmental... ( gunpolicy.org )

KAMPALA -- The government has disarmed 80% of the warriors in Karamoja sub-region, a senior security official has said. Olandason Wanyama reports that speaking at the closure of a two-day National Agriculture Advisory Services (NAADS) review workshop recently, the regional internal security officer, Emmy Twagira, said the region was now more peaceful. "Compared to what people used to read and hear about Karamoja, the situation is not bad today," he said, adding that the UPDF had rolled up to the level of the sub-county and the communities now felt its presence. Last month, humanitarian agencies warned their nationals about impending insecurity... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Gun Dealers Fuel Rush to Buy Firearms in Fear of Obama Victory
Washington Times
30 Oct 2008
The nation's gun owners have the presidential election in their sights. Some are up at arms about the prospect of future gun legislation should Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama win the White House. Others are beefing up their personal arsenals, skittish that firearms could become scarce or too expensive in the near future. "If the economy is down, and gun sales are up, it shows you just how deep-seated the concern is out there about the situation," said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. "Most gun owners at least until recently have been misled by Senator Obama. Though he claims to be... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Gun Lobby 'Wackos' Force Pro-Obama Rifle Maker CEO to Resign
USA Today
30 Oct 2008
WASHINGTON -- Montana gunsmith Dan Cooper has been ousted as chief executive of the rifle company that bears his name after pressure from gun owners who are angry that he is supporting Democrat Barack Obama. Cooper, founder and part owner of Cooper Firearms, told USA TODAY in a story published Tuesday that he has voted for Republicans for most of his life, but he is backing Obama "probably because of the war. And also because the Republican Party has moved so far right in recent years." Cooper said he was attracted to the Democrat's message about "the retooling of America, which involves the building of middle-class jobs and helping American small business be... ( gunpolicy.org )
