St Petersburg Times (Florida)

LUTZ -- Sunday evening, Linda Lunn, 41, smoked a cigarette outside her home in the Paradise Lakes nudist resort and shared a good laugh with her stepson's girlfriend. Inside, Lunn's husband, Richard, 61, had piled his new guns on the kitchen island and was proudly showing off the firearms to his son, Dan, 34. "We thought it was cute," said Margaret Wilcox, 40, Dan Lunn's girlfriend. Linda Lunn went inside for a cup of coffee. There was a loud bang. Pasco deputies said that as Richard Lunn discussed a Glock .357-caliber with his son, he pulled the trigger and accidentally shot his wife in the chest. "She wasn't even 2 feet away,"... Baltimore Sun

A new city law requiring gun owners to notify police when their weapon is lost or stolen will help police track down the "bad guy with guns" Baltimore City Police Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III said yesterday. "This is an added tool," Bealefeld said. "I am hoping that other people throughout the state will take notice." The law, which takes effect Nov. 11, requires gun owners to alert police within two days from the time they notice their weapon is missing. Failing to report a missing weapon will be a misdemeanor carrying a $500 fine for a first offense. Subsequent violations could result in $750 fines and up to 90 days imprisonment. Bealefeld... Finland has introduced stricter rules on gun permits, following a school shooting in which 11 people died. Handgun permits would no longer be granted to first-time applicants, the interior ministry said. Instead, they must train for at least a year at a gun club before being allowed to apply for a permit. All applicants must also provide a note from a doctor about their mental health and sit an interview with police. The new rules cover pistols and revolvers. The new guidelines were issued to police on Monday. The government also is planning to amend Finland's gun law - one of the most liberal in Europe - to enable police to... ( gunpolicy.org )

Strident, Dismissive US Supreme Court Sides With Foes of Gun Control

Journal of the American Medical Association / JAMA. 2008;300(13):1575-1577, Editorial
30 Sep 2008

In District of Columbia v Heller, The Supreme Court held, for the first time in its history, that the Second Amendment grants an individual right to possess and use firearms for personal use, which encompasses the right to keep a loaded handgun at home for self-defense. Justice Scalia, writing for a bitterly divided court that split 5 to 4 along ideological lines, said that the Second Amendment "surely elevates above all other interests the right of law-abiding, responsible citizens to use arms in defense of hearth and home." (1) The court thereby struck down a Washington, DC, law that bars registration of a handgun because, Scalia said, it prohibits a class... ( gunpolicy.org )

The woman, whose identity has not been released, was found lying on a bed with a gunshot wound to the head. A neighbor who ran over to the house in the 5100 block of Village Lawn, just off Ray Bon Drive, said the boyfriend, 20, was holding his girlfriend in his arms, panicking, and saying, "Come on, baby, you can make it!
