Licensed Hidden Handgun Owner Kills 3 in Georgia Hospital Revenge Attack

COLUMBUS, Georgia -- Armed with a three-year grudge and more guns than he could hold, a former substitute teacher stormed a west Georgia hospital looking to punish the nurse he blamed for his mother's death. The nurse, another employee and a bystander are dead, the alleged shooter is being treated for a gunshot wound police gave him and a military community accustomed to grieving is reeling. Charles Johnston, 63, was expected to face murder and assault charges in Thursday's rampage at Doctors Hospital, Police Chief Ricky Boren said. Johnston was being treated at another hospital Friday. In the aftermath of the Sept. 11 attacks, metal detectors sprouted all over the Capitol. It's now virtually impossible to get to see a legislator during session without being searched for any kind of weapon. When it comes to their own safety, lawmakers are pretty darn careful. But they're perfectly willing to bargain away the valid safety concerns of the state's business owners and employers. Don't want guns on your property? Too bad. The National Rifle Association says you should allow them, and the Legislature seems ready to knuckle under to that powerful lobby. Cash Reward Offered to Baghdad Fighters Who Give Up Their Guns

BAGHDAD -- Prime Minister Nouri Maliki on Friday extended a deadline for fighters to disarm after nobody responded, and U.S. forces were pulled deeper into the showdown between Iraqi security forces and Shiite militiamen. The United States military said a Navy jet had strafed a mortar-launching position in the southern city of Basra with 20-millimeter cannon fire Thursday night, killing three "criminal militia members." It was the first time U.S. forces were directly involved in the combat in Basra, where Maliki launched an offensive against militias Tuesday.
