Albany, New York Struggles to Establish Gun Violence Task Force
Albany Times-Union (New York)
28 Dec 2008
ALBANY -- The Common Council is being asked to create a team to help implement the recommendations of the Gun Violence Task Force. With the task force's work just completed, Council member Dominick Calsolaro does not want their recommendations to get lost. Among other steps, the task force recommended the city hire a full-time violence prevention coordinator; start a crisis team to respond to shootings to prevent further violence; and create a team of former gang members and inmates who would work in troubled neighborhoods to steer youths from violence. "We need to have an official group set up to follow these things through," the First Ward council... ( gunpolicy.org )

Gun Prohibitionists Take Their Meddling Into Americans' Living Rooms
Duluth News Tribune (Minnesota), Opinion
28 Dec 2008
A week before Minnesota's firearm deer season I visited my 86-year-old father. He regaled me with an entertaining stream of tales from his 70 years as a deer hunter in the north woods. He lamented his failing eyesight and then rose from his ancient recliner and went to the closet where he keeps his guns. He took out a battered old case and handed it me. "I want you to have this." I knew what was inside. A Savage model 219 single-shot 30-30 rifle. My father bought it in 1944 for $12. It's well worn after more than 60 years of hard use. It was an honor to be given such an heirloom. Over the past few years my father has passed on most of his modest collection of... ( gunpolicy.org )

But things quickly turned sour and divorce documents paint a bitter picture of Bruce Pardo's increasing desperation as he lost first his wife, then his job and finally the dog. By fall 2008, Pardo was asking a judge to have his ex-wife pay him support and cover his attorney's fees. Pardo's downward slide ended Christmas Eve, when the 45-year-old electrical engineer donned a Santa suit and massacred nine... ( gunpolicy.org )

Sharp Rise in Gun Licences Issued in Mumbai, But Most Were Refused
Times of India / TNN
28 Dec 2008
MUMBAI -- The number of gun licences granted by the Mumbai police more than doubled from 2006 to 2007. In 2006, the police issued 172 licences, and in the following year, the number shot up to 416. The jump was despite the fact that there was no significant increase in the number of applications for arms licences. The city police rejected almost two-thirds of the applications for arms licences in the five years from 2003 to 2007. During this period, 3,712 applications were received, but only 1,393 were approved. Most were rejected because they did not cite adequate reasons to justify the need for a weapon. Of the 1,393 licences granted, 546... ( gunpolicy.org )
