Xinhua
25 Feb 2008
MEXICO CITY -- Individuals own 80 million guns in Latin America, and the region sees 90,000 armed attacks a year, according to an Organization of American States (OAS) document published in Mexico's media on Monday. Speaking last week during an official visit to Mexico, the OAS secretary general, Jose Miguel Insulza, said that guns in private hands represent a major and growing security risk. He said that controlling the flow of guns is an urgent problem that requires international cooperation. "Nations should cooperate in reducing the illegal trade in arms and their accessories within producing countries and against arms smuggling to other parts of... ( gunpolicy.org )

English 'Shocked' as Suffolk Newspaper Reveals 40 Guns Stolen in 4 Years
Ipswich Evening Star (UK)
25 Feb 2008
More than 40 guns have been stolen in Suffolk in the space of four years, The Evening Star can reveal today. New figures show that between 2003 and last year, 43 guns, including shotguns, rifles and handguns, have been "misappropriated", a term including stolen guns as well as those obtained by fraud or forgery. It is not clear how many of the weapons remain at large on the streets of Suffolk. The alarming figure includes 33 shotguns, seven rifles and three handguns and is nearly twice the number of misappropriations as there were in Greater Manchester during the same period (22). The figures came to light after David Ruffley, MP for... ( gunpolicy.org )

Los Angeles Times
25 Feb 2008
A Yorba Linda man killed his wife and three of his children late Saturday night before turning the shotgun on himself in a small condominium across the street from the Richard Nixon Library & Birthplace, police said Sunday. A 14-year-old stepson of the man was also shot but was expected to survive. Police said they did not know the motive for the attacks. Before he underwent surgery, the stepson was not able to explain what started the rampage. "We believe this was a domestic violence situation and a murder-suicide," Lt. Jack Conklin of the Brea Police Department said outside the home. Brea police, which patrols Yorba Linda, are investigating... ( gunpolicy.org )

To Shield US Gun Dealers, Gun Lobby Blocks Bush Choice for Law Enforcer
Los Angeles Times
25 Feb 2008
WASHINGTON -- President Bush has accused Senate Democrats of unfairly holding up scores of appointments he has made to the federal bench and other senior government positions. The nominees, many of whom have been awaiting Senate confirmation for months, are being treated like "political pawns," Bush said earlier this month. Michael J. Sullivan, the president's choice to head the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, is one of them. But his problems aren't with Democrats. Sullivan, a U.S. attorney from Massachusetts, was appointed by Bush to head the ATF nearly a year ago, making him one of the president's longer-serving stalled nominees.... ( gunpolicy.org )

Twelve US States Mull Bills to Allow Hidden Handguns on Campus, in Class
Los Angeles Times, Column
25 Feb 2008
I am having a recurring nightmare. It takes place in a lecture hall at Anywhere State College during a tedious presentation on the history of video games. The only alert person in the class, a straight-A student majoring in Wi-Fi, suddenly notices an unfamiliar male entering the room. He is wearing a hooded sweat shirt because it is cold outside and the wind is blowing, but it makes him look like a convenience store crook. He is also carrying a backpack and begins to reach into it. I know, because I am an observer in the nightmare, that the stranger is only going for his NRA Play Station "Blood in Space" to occupy his mind during the lecture... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Supreme Court Denies Gun Lobby More Argument Time in DC Ban Case
Legal Times (USA)
25 Feb 2008
In a brief order on today's order list the Supreme Court dashed the hopes of gun rights advocates who hoped to have two lawyers and additional time arguing their cause before the Supreme Court when it hears arguments in the historic case D.C. v. Heller on March 18. Without explanation, the Court denied the motion of Texas Solicitor General R. Ted Cruz for argument time on the side of Alan Gura of Gura & Possessky, who has argued the pro-Second Amendment position from the start of the case. But the Court did agree to give Solicitor General Paul Clement 15 minutes to argue, in addition to the 30 minutes for each side in the case. The Court's action... ( gunpolicy.org )
