NZ Police Call for Restrictions on Airgun Ownership After Woman Killed
TV3 National News
24 Oct 2008
How dangerous are airguns? Police say they can easily kill people at short range, and they are worried at how easily they can be bought -- owners do not even need a firearms licence. The report -- Criminal Use of Handguns in Australia -- by Australian Institute of Criminology researcher Samantha Bricknell found 172,422 registered handguns were recorded nationally. It also stated "handguns had increasingly become the firearm of choice" for criminals and many legally-owned weapons were being stolen. Some... ( gunpolicy.org )

Tens of Thousands More AK-47s Given to Tribal Fighters in Pakistan, Iraq
Australian (Sydney)
24 Oct 2008
Anti-Taliban tribal fighters in Pakistan's border region will be given tens of thousands of AK-47 assault rifles bought from China in a bid to replicate the success of the "Sunni Awakening" movement in Iraq. The deal to buy the weapons and other small arms was negotiated by Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari when he was in Beijing this month, reports said yesterday. The Washington Post said the weapons would go to the so-called tribal lashkars (armies) that are emerging as a key feature of Pakistan's strategy to battle militants linked to al-Qa'ida and the Taliban. In recent weeks, the lashkars have been used in tandem with the offensives... ( gunpolicy.org )
