Bulgaria, 7 Other Nations Make 'Unlicensed, Illegal' AK-47s, Export to Iraq
FOCUS News Agency (Bulgaria) / Praim-TASS
20 Nov 2008
MOSCOW -- 7-8 countries in the world are currently dealing with unlicensed production of machine guns "Kalashnikov", Nikolay Dimidyuk from Rosoboronexport said, cited by Praim-TASS. According to his evaluation there was a total nuisance in the world regarding the production of 'false' Kalashnikov guns, in particular in Bulgaria. 'I will not mention other countries, so as not to offend them. The Americans allowed Bulgaria to build a factory for the production of Kalashnikov and they sell it to Iraq and Afghanistan', Dimidyuk said. According to him 'no one' has a license to produce Kalashnikov. The licenses expired with the collapse of the Warsaw... ( gunpolicy.org )

Times-Picayune (Louisiana)
20 Nov 2008
When Ronald "R.J." Richard jumps on his tractor to do yard work, he normally clips his cell phone to the hip pocket of his overalls. But Saturday he decided to hook it to bib of the garment, just over his heart. It was a decision made without a second thought, but it was one that might have saved Richard's life a short while later. "Something hit me in the chest really hard," said Richard, who initially thought he had been struck by a rock kicked up by the motor. But when he took off his sweater and opened the nylon case for his Motorola Razr phone, a .45-caliber bullet fell out. The stray bullet, probably fired from the woods near... ( gunpolicy.org )

Gun Culture Promotes Violence, Arms Race in Philippines: Let's Say No
Manila Times, Opinion
20 Nov 2008
Another sad, senseless death and it's Christmas season. A nine-year-old child was shot to death yesterday -- hit right in the heart. Another random killing, another family broken, another injustice. Perhaps it is to be expected in this land of ours where everyone packs a gun or intends to, finances allowing. Our fetish with guns and the awesome destructive power that comes with them is a product of several factors. The long years of oppression and the consequent rebellions to drive away foreign invaders and colonizers gave us the history of arms. Our American educators gave us the legal basis to keep and bear arms even though our Constitution calls for a peaceful... ( gunpolicy.org )

Guns in US Schools: Gun Owners Must Keep Weapons Away from Kids
Sun-Sentinel (Florida), Editorial
20 Nov 2008
Youngsters are going to do some terribly irresponsible, dangerous things at times. The recent tragedy at a South Florida high school, plus two ensuing incidents at other schools, should serve as a reminder that parents who own guns must show extra care and responsibility, because their children may not. There have been three recent incidents involving guns in schools -- the horrible tragedy at Dillard High School involving the shooting death of 15-year-old Amanda Collette, a scare at Walker Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale when an 8-year-old third-grader brought a gun to class, and another involving a 16-year-old at Miramar High who had a gun in a book bag.... A Syrian arms dealer argued Wednesday that he was merely helping Spanish intelligence when he explored a deal to sell weapons to Colombian terrorists for use against the United States. The attorney for Monzer al-Kassar, 62, told a Southern District of New York jury in closing argument that his client never intended to sell weapons to the Colombian rebel group FARC and was only continuing his long history as an intelligence asset to Spain. "There is no case here," attorney Ira Sorkin told the jury in Judge Jed Rakoff's courtroom. "This was a sting against an individual in Spain created out of whole cloth by the [Drug Enforcement Administration] using... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Feds to Aid 'Thousands of Licensed Gun Dealers in Violation of Law'
Washington Post
20 Nov 2008
Every year, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives finds thousands of licensed gun dealers in violation of federal law, often for very minor problems. The agency, which conducts about 11,000 inspections a year, says it has come up with a way to eliminate many of those violations before they happen. Instead of filling out the required ATF paperwork by hand, gun buyers and dealers will now be able to complete what officials say is a fail-safe electronic version of the document, known as Form 4473. Speaking at a gun shop in Upper Marlboro where he announced the change, acting ATF Director Michael J. Sullivan said the new option... ( gunpolicy.org )
