US Supreme Court Ignores Racist Origins, Purpose of White Gun Ownership
Mother Jones (USA)
20 Mar 2008
Racial politics dominated the talk in Washington this week as Barack Obama called on Americans to stop ignoring the country's racist past and move forward. The message, apparently, didn't reach the U.S. Supreme Court, where the justices were busy ignoring race during a hearing on the biggest case of the year. On Tuesday, at the same time Obama gave his big speech, the court heard oral arguments in D.C. v. Heller, a case challenging the District of Columbia's 30-year-old law banning handgun ownership. The case marks the first time the Supreme Court has reviewed the Second Amendment in 70 years, and its interpretation could have far-reaching implications for state gun laws.... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Should Not Deprive Governments of Their Ability to Prevent Gun Violence
Washington Post, Editorial
20 Mar 2008
By the end of oral arguments Tuesday in the case of District of Columbia v. Heller, a majority of Supreme Court justices seemed to embrace the notion that the Second Amendment recognizes an individual right to keep and bear arms. Such a conclusion, however, should not automatically prove fatal to the District's admittedly tough gun control law. Every right, including freedom of speech, is subject to some limitations. The legal and public policy arguments for allowing broad government regulation of firearms are compelling. District law bans private ownership of handguns and requires long guns to be kept in the home disassembled or stored with a trigger lock. This... ( gunpolicy.org )

US High Court Must Recognise Right of High-crime Cities to Restrict Guns
Daily News (New York), Column
20 Mar 2008
When he lived in Georgia, Fabio Coicou had a permit to legally pack a pistol, but there's no evidence he had anything more in his pockets than his hands when he stood chest-to-chest with Sean Bell outside the Kalua Cabaret. "It's illegal to have a gun in New York," Coicou testified. "No permit. No gun." Yet, New York is so infested with illegal weapons from lax states like Georgia that the very fact Coicou had his hand in his pocket made at least some of Bell's friends figure he had a gun. "Of course, I thought he had a gun," Hugh Jensen testified. The cops apparently decided that Bell's friends were going to get a gun of their own.... ( gunpolicy.org )

FORT WORTH, Texas -- Police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms are investigating the theft of about two dozen handguns from a Fort Worth sporting goods store. The store owner told FOX 4's Adrian Arambulo that the thieves got away with about $10,000 worth of guns --- all of them handguns. The owner said his business has been in the same location in the 2500 block of NE Loop 820 for nine years and this is only the second break-in and the first in five years. The shop is equipped with security cameras and the theft was caught on tape. ... ( gunpolicy.org )

Illegal Guns 'Unacceptable' in Namibia: Government Plans to Tighten Law
Namibian (Windhoek)
20 Mar 2008
WINDHOEK -- With plans underway to change the country's Arms and Ammunition Act, officials from the Police and other relevant bodies spent some time last week in a consultative workshop to discuss the law's review. Deputy Minister of Safety and Security Gabes Shihepo said the steep rise in violent crimes emphasised the changing role of small arms and light weapons. "Namibia is experiencing a high degree of intensity of brutality pertaining to passion killings, murders, armed robberies, car hijackings, just to mention a few serious crimes. I am sure as concerned citizens you ask yourselves, why all this crime?" he said. Shihepo said... ( gunpolicy.org )

Gun Control is Essential to Protect Citizens from Violence
South Florida Sun-Sentinel (Fort Lauderdale), Opinion
20 Mar 2008
Is it any wonder our nation leads the world in people behind bars for murders, rapes and all other violence? We have people like the Rev. Al Sharpton coming to Florida complaining about the treatment the teens accused of the Dunbar Village gang rape are getting, instead of vociferously denouncing it. We should not be surprised if the American Civil Liberties Union gets involved. We have mass killings in schools and places of business. My wife and I watch the 11 o'clock news and usually the three to four lead stories pertain to local murders. What do we do with these killers? We subject them to prison with three good meals a day, TV, gyms and... ( gunpolicy.org )
