Daily Nation (Nairobi)
19 Oct 2008

NAIROBI -- Guns from Mt Elgon and an employee of Eldoret bullet factory assisted the gangs who unleashed violence in the North Rift, the Waki commission report reveals. It lays bare an intricate plan, design and execution of the violence in the area that attracted the country's and world's attention when women and children were burnt alive in a church. The report, on the basis of evidence given by witnesses, indicates that politicians and athletes from the region worked closely with raiders who attacked, burned houses and commercial buildings and in the process killed more than 205 people. Intelligence reports, the Waki team says, showed that... ( gunpolicy.org )

Bangladesh Police Handguns Stolen, Smuggled to Calcutta for Sale

Telegraph (Calcutta)
19 Oct 2008

Bangladeshi criminal Subrata Bayen, who was arrested on October 13 in a Palm Avenue flat, was allegedly running an international arms smuggling racket from the city. According to officers of the Special Task Force (STF), Bayen's men would steal imported pistols from the Bangladesh police armoury and smuggle them to Calcutta. Investigations revealed that improvised firearms made in Bihar are in demand in Bangladesh and are routinely smuggled across the border. "In exchange, 9-mm pistols made in Italy and Germany would be stolen from the Bangladesh police armoury and smuggled to Calcutta," said an STF officer. The arrangement worked because... Both Candidates for Montana's Peak Law Job Claim 'Most Pro-gun' Title

Missoulian (Montana)
19 Oct 2008

HELENA, Montana -- Democrat Steve Bullock and Republican Tim Fox, the two men running to be Montana's next attorney general, have been in a gun fight for months now. Since July, Fox has pushed gun rights as a cornerstone of his campaign and targeted Bullock for being, in his campaign's estimation, weaker on the issue. The National Rifle Association and the Montana Shooting Sports Association have both endorsed Fox. But Bullock's position in favor of gun rights is also strong and, Bullock said, tested by personal tragedy. In 1994, Bullock's 11-year-old nephew Jeremy Bullock was shot and killed on a Butte playground by a classmate facing crisis... ( gunpolicy.org )

Brawl, Gun Use Puts North Carolina's Hidden Handgun Law in Spotlight

Citizen-Times (North Carolina)
19 Oct 2008

ASHEVILLE -- Some just stood and stared. But dozens of other parents and children who saw a gun come out during a fight at a crowded family amusement center couldn't find cover fast enough amid the lines of video and arcade games. The off-duty law enforcement officer who pulled out the handgun had every legal right to be carrying a concealed weapon, even on a recreational trip to Fun Depot with his family. The same would have been true for more than 10,000 other people holding concealed handgun permits in Western North Carolina. State law allows permit holders to carry the concealed guns in a wide range of businesses and public places, something... ( gunpolicy.org )

"I'm glad it's over with and I want to get on with my life," he told Superior Court Justice Lynda Templeton. Mellow, who has lived under strict bail conditions since 2002, pleaded guilty Friday to one count of possession of a handgun without a licence. He was fined $1,000 and placed on probation for a year. Tribune-Review (Pittsburgh)
19 Oct 2008

Todd Palin didn't speak long during a quick stop in Allegheny County on Saturday, but the husband of vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin said enough to rouse loud cheers at a rally of fellow hunters and gun enthusiasts. Nearly 80 outdoorsmen burst into applause when the avid sportsman pledged the Republican ticket headed by Sen. John McCain would support "our core values." "Make sure you bring your hunting and fishing buddies to the polls to vote," he told the group at the Pitcairn-Monroeville Sportsmen's Club in North Versailles. Palin, dubbed Alaska's First Dude by his governor wife, characterized Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic nominee,... ( gunpolicy.org )

A Commission of Inquiry in Samoa into the alleged smuggling of guns from American Samoa in a police patrol boat has been extended to hear more evidence. US Gun Lobby Spending $10 Million-plus to Defeat 'Anti-gun' Obama

Orlando Sentinel (Florida) / Cox News Service
19 Oct 2008

WASHINGTON -- The National Rifle Association is spending more than $10 million to keep Barack Obama from occupying the White House. The formidable gun-rights group is waging a full-court press against the Illinois senator and Democratic nominee for president, claiming that Obama would be the "most anti-gun president in American history." Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action, the political and lobbying arm of the group, said Obama's talk of supporting the Second Amendment does not match his record. "It's shameless at best for a candidate like Barack Obama, who has a lifetime of support for a radical gun-control... ( gunpolicy.org )
