STEPHANIE MARCH: The mismanagement of government stockpiles of weapons by authorities is a common thread throughout East Timor's relationship with small arms over the past 50 years. Most recently, soldier turned rebel Alfredo Reinado and his followers who were in possession of police weapons shot and seriously injured President Jose Ramos Horta in February this year. Weak government gun control first became a problem in 1959 in the mountain district of Viqueque when a group of anti-imperialist rebels seized 48 weapons from government offices and launched a bloody yet unsuccessful rebellion. Gun Control, Leakage of Police, Military Weapons Still Haunt East Timor

FAYETTEVILLE, North Carolina -- Fear brought Joseph Cannon to Jim's Gun Jobbery on a recent Wednesday. But the 53-year-old retired Special Forces soldier isn't afraid for his safety. He's worried that soon after Jan. 20 -- when Barack Obama takes the presidential oath of office -- he won't be able to buy the gun he wants. The Fayetteville Observer reported that Cannon, who served on a marksmanship unit during his 20-year Army career, was out of luck in his search for a Ruger Mini-30 assault rifle that fires AK-47 rounds. The $700 gun had sold out by a recent Thursday. Since the Nov. 4 election, thousands of people have flooded gun dealers because... ( gunpolicy.org )
