BAGHDAD -- In the past, the soldiers with 1st Battalion, 68th Infantry would have had no problem finding an AK-47 assault rifle in Omar Abdul Satar's home. Iraqis have a long history of owning guns, and few homes in the country are without one. But the government is trying to change that. It recently decided to prohibit guns in the capital. That was bad news for Satar. When the U.S. soldiers and their Iraqi counterparts found his AK, they confiscated it and took it back to their base in Baghdad's Adhamiyah district. In an operation of the Bosnia-Hercegovina Investigations and Protection Agency [SIPA] in the Central Bosnia, Zenica-Doboj and Sarajevo cantons, as well as in Banja Luka, a large quantity of arms, military equipment and explosive devices has been seized. Six persons from Vitez, Zenica, Travnik and Sarajevo have been arrested. An investigation is under way. SIPA have said that this is not the final number of arrests. BUENOS AIRES -- Although he did not show up at court, former Argentina president Carlos Menem began to be tried Thursday in Argentina for his alleged involvement in smuggling arms to Ecuador and Croatia, the biggest corruption scandal during his years in office (1989-1999). According to his lawyer, Omar Daer, the 77-year-old Menem did not attend the first session because "he is not in any state to stand trial" as he is suffering from "stress, severe anemia, diabetes and allergies."
