Saint John Telegraph Journal (New Brunswick)
16 May 2008

ST. STEPHEN -- A cry of frustration swept the room Thursday when police told the border community that the 33 alleged members of a gun-smuggling crime ring they arrested this week were set free. "We don't feel protected," yelled a member of the audience. "They are back on the street corners and you don't know what to expect. You are on pins and needles waiting. Put them in jail where they belong." Members of police organizations across the province lined up on Thursday morning in front of a string of cameras and an even bigger group of citizens, to explain searches at seven homes in St. Stephen, two in Mayfield, two in Saint John, one in Mohannes and... BBC News
16 May 2008

Some British army weapons are finding their way into the hands of criminal gangs -- and a former Royal Military Police investigator believes they may be ill-equipped to stop it. Mark is in his 30s and he says he now lives a quiet life. But in the 1990s, he had links with criminal gangs in Manchester. He claims to have bought hundreds of guns to hire out to his associates for use in serious crime, and they would often come from an unlikely source -- the armed forces. This military equipment came from what Mark considered to be the best source. "In all my deals and associations that I had made, all the hardware that was displayed in those... ( gunpolicy.org )

Reuters
16 May 2008

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- Republican presidential candidate John McCain warned gun owners on Friday that his Democratic opponents Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton would threaten their right to bear arms, as he sought to rally conservatives' support in the November election. The right to bear arms in the Constitution's second amendment is considered sacred by many U.S. gun owners. Both Obama and Clinton tout their support for it, although they also say ways must be found to keep guns from falling into the hands of criminals or those who are mentally ill. But the Arizona senator accused the two Democrats of giving only "theoretical" support to the second... ( gunpolicy.org )

Associated Press
16 May 2008

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- Courting his sometime critics within the gun lobby, John McCain told the National Rifle Association on Friday that Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton would both undermine the rights of gun owners. "If either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama is elected president, the rights of law-abiding gun owners will be at risk my friends -- and have no doubt about it," the Republican nominee-in-waiting told a crowd of several thousand. McCain acknowledged he has been no darling of gun-rights advocates, having pushed through signature campaign finance legislation gun supporters say has muzzled free speech. The Arizona senator...
