Pro-gun Campaign Targets New Wal-Mart Policies to Curb US Gun Running

Tribune-Review (Pittsburgh)
13 May 2008

Is America's largest retailer getting out of the hunting and fishing business? If not, it certainly seems to be cutting back. Earlier this year, Wal-Mart told fishing tackle suppliers that their gear -- like fabrics and other "rural products" -- might be removed from some stores altogether, or at least be stocked only seasonally. That doesn't mean Wal-Mart is getting out of the fishing business, company executives said. Nor is the company turning its back on hunters, they added. But recently, Wal-Mart joined New York mayor Michael Bloomberg at a gathering of his group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, to announce a series of changes to the way... ( gunpolicy.org )

A Fort Worth man trying to scratch an itch on his back used a revolver and accidentally shot himself. Jorge Espinal, 44, was drinking beer and playing poker around 3 a.m. Sunday in his home in the 3500 block of Montague Street, when he got up from the table and walked into another room, said Fort Worth police Lt. Kenneth Dean. "He told officers he had an itch on his back and grabbed the first thing he could get a hold of, which was a revolver," Lt. Dean said. "The gun went off." Mr. Espinal went back and told his buddies that he shot himself. "They didn't believe him until they saw the blood coming down his back," Lt. Dean said. Mr.... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Gun Owners Join Moderate Pro-gun Group to Counter 'Terrorist' NRA

Philadelphia Inquirer (Pennsylvania), Column
13 May 2008

Mayor Nutter and Gov. Rendell are taking aim and don't plan to let up. In the aftermath of the cold-blooded killing of Philadelphia Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski with a semiautomatic weapon, they made a written appeal to lawmakers in Harrisburg last week. Man up -- now. Stand up for the state's law enforcement officers and ban the possession, manufacture, use and importation of assault weapons. This latest action comes on the heels of the mayor, no doubt sick and tired of being sick and tired of Harrisburg's failure to get any traction on gun control, signing five new gun laws that were to take effect immediately. He had to... ( gunpolicy.org )

US NRA Chief Stresses Common Ground with Republican John McCain

Washington Post / AP
13 May 2008

LOUISVILLE, Kentucky -- A top official of the National Rifle Association said Republican John McCain has been a reliable ally of gun owners despite divisions with the powerful lobbying group on some issues. "We've had our disagreements, everybody knows it," NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre told The Associated Press in an interview Tuesday. "I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree on those. We're not foolish enough to ignore the vast areas of agreement in which John McCain has been a friend to gun owners." McCain is scheduled to address the NRA convention Friday in Louisville, Ky. The likely Republican presidential nominee has... ( gunpolicy.org )
