Scared, Gun-toting Pennsylvania Woman Divides Her Community
Philadelphia Inquirer
12 Dec 2008
LEBANON, Pennsylvania -- Before heading out the door to go to Wal-Mart, Meleanie Hain fussed over her children, grabbed her coat and keys, then ran upstairs to get one more item: her loaded Glock 26, which she strapped to her hip. She never leaves home without it. Hain, 30, has caused a stir in this rural Pennsylvania Dutch community 25 miles east of Harrisburg for packing a gun everywhere she goes, including to her 5-year-old daughter's soccer games this fall. She's paid a big price for sticking to her gun. The mother of four, who often carries a baby on one hip and her Glock on the other, has been criticized by even the most ardent... ( gunpolicy.org )

Feds Try to Stop US Guns Flooding Over Border to Mexican Drug Cartels
USA Today
12 Dec 2008
U.S., Mexican and Colombian officials are taking new steps to stop U.S.-based gun-smuggling networks that arm violent Mexican drug cartels. The focus on gun smuggling comes as new Drug Enforcement Administration data out today show street prices of cocaine reaching near record levels. The three countries have shared intelligence to target major drug cartels in successful prosecutions, which appears to have slowed the flow of cocaine into the USA. The high prices "suggest that we are placing significant stress on the drug delivery system," DEA Intelligence Chief Tony Placido says. The DEA will work with Mexico and Colombia to staunch cash and weapons... ( gunpolicy.org )

Confiscating Toy Guns from Children Is Part of US Military Mission in Iraq
Associated Press
12 Dec 2008
MAHMOUDIYA, Iraq -- Two boys approached a U.S. soldier, pulled out a pistol and handed it over. They got a smile and some candy in return. The gun was plastic, and the boys were following a local Iraqi military order to surrender all toy weapons -- an effort to prevent children from being mistaken for insurgents. With more children on the streets now that violence is down, American soldiers have a new mission in this former "triangle of death" city south of Baghdad: clearing all toy guns from the bustling shopping area as they search for suspected insurgents and weapons caches. The toy gun ban shows how jittery the U.S. and Iraqi forces still... ( gunpolicy.org )

Arkansas Mass Child Shooter Found Applying for Hidden Handgun Permit
Associated Press
12 Dec 2008
LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas -- After serving nearly a decade in custody for opening fire at a Jonesboro middle school in a 1998 sniper attack that killed four students and a teacher, Andrew Golden was released last year at age 21 and tried to start a new life. While co-defendant Mitchell Johnson found himself in trouble with police within 6 months of his release, Golden went to Cape Girardeau, Mo., registering for a driver's license and adopting a new name. He caught the attention of police only once, after losing control of a motorcycle along a rural road in northern Arkansas this spring. But by then, he was Drew Douglas Grant, a student at a Batesville community... ( gunpolicy.org )

American Gun Clubs Tout Safety Record After 14yr-old Boy's Uzi Death
Associated Press
12 Dec 2008
BOSTON -- Gun control advocates are hoping that manslaughter indictments in the death of an 8-year-old boy who was allowed to fire an Uzi during a gun fair will have a chilling effect nationally on gun shows that encourage the participation of children. But enthusiasts say gun ranges are remarkably safe and that most shows do not feature live shooting like the one in Westfield where Christopher Bizilj, of Ashford, Conn., lost control of the powerful automatic weapon when aiming at a pumpkin and shot himself in the head. James Wallace, executive director of the Gun Owners' Action League, a membership-based organization that represents individual gun owners... ( gunpolicy.org )
