Feds Say 9 Arizona Men Bought Guns at Shows, Sold to Mexican Cartels

Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Explosives and Mesa and Gilbert police Thursday arrested nine men throughout Mesa and Gilbert accused of selling firearms to a violent Mexican drug cartel, according to the ATF. Bill Newell, a special agent in charge of the ATF Phoenix office, told the Tribune the men were arrested after nearly a yearlong investigation into the federal firearms violations for selling high-powered firearms to Sinaloa, a cartel based in Sonora, Mexico. TACOMA, Washington -- The serial number on a handgun seized at a Pierce County junior high school has helped authorities solve a Vancouver-area firearms store theft that netted about 130 weapons. Investigators said Thursday that one of three students arrested last week at Bethel Junior High in Spanaway when two guns were seized there was involved in the Nov. 30 break-in at Brightwater Ventures. Clark County Deputy Juvenile Prosecutor Rick Olson told The Columbian he's preparing an arrest warrant to bring the 15-year-old boy to Clark County to face charges of first-degree burglary and theft of firearms. What started as a routine traffic stop on the QEII became anything but once Mounties found the vehicle to be armed like a fortress. RCMP pulled over a 2004 Chevy Avalanche at 4:10 p.m. on Dec. 2 after calls from frightened drivers reported the truck speeding down the highway and weaving in and out of traffic. Once the truck was stopped near the Olds overpass, Mounties were shocked to discover several thousand rounds of ammunition and nine firearms inside -- including a sawed-off shotgun and three automatic assault rifles. The Inspector General of Police Mike Okiro said policemen whose guns are stolen or no where to be found will face stiffer punishment. Okiro gave the warning in Abuja yesterday during a meeting with Mobile Police Force Squadron (PMF) Commanders. He said any policeman who allows guns attached to him to be stolen or to get missing will be held responsible and will be punished severely. EL PASO -- A federal grand jury Wednesday indicted a U.S. citizen living in Juárez on charges of smuggling drugs and an immigrant and of providing false information to buy weapons, including an FN Herstal 5.7 "cop killer" handgun allegedly used in a crime in Mexico City, the U.S. Attorney's Office said. Ramon Eduardo Gandara, 30, faces up to life in prison if convicted in the 35-count indictment. The government seeks the forfeiture of $185,000 allegedly linked to illegal activity.
