AK-47s Cross Borders Freely in Warlords' Gun Markets of North Rift Valley

Standard (Nairobi)
10 Dec 2008

Ethokon Lumana Engolon was relaxed and enjoying herding his cattle and goats 500 meters away from his Manyatta in Kalimorock, Turkana South District, when his life was transformed. The day had began well and his mind occasionally wandered as he took pride of how his stock had doubled and fattened. He was excited that with the onset of short rains and maturing of new pasture, the long trek in search of water and pasture would temporarily be forgotten. Excruciating pain But as fate would have it, all that happiness and joy was not to last for long. It was soon to be replaced by agony, pain and suffering. As if struck by lightening,... Bush 'Rushed Through Absurd, Dangerous' Rule to Allow Guns in Parks

New York Times, Editorial
10 Dec 2008

Anticipating what Barack Obama has called "common-sense gun safety laws," the Bush administration has rushed through a last-minute gun rule that is the antithesis of common sense. The Interior Department published a rule last week that will allow loaded, concealed weapons in nearly all of this country's national parks. The rule, which will take effect next month, will apply to national parks in every state that has a concealed carry law, even if guns are prohibited in state parks. The administration -- again -- also has ignored the point of a public comment period. It received 140,000 comments on this proposed rule change, the vast majority opposing it, and still... Hidden Handguns in US Parks: Bush Gives Parting Bear Hug to the NRA

The Day (Connecticut), Opinion
10 Dec 2008

These last bull-in-the-china-shop days of the Bush administration proceed apace. With time running out, the administration has been resorting to presidential orders and other peremptorily devices to pay off its special-interest backers and ideological stakeholders. The shattered crockery is piling up. Environmental protections have been a particular target, of course, capping the damage from Bush's negligence with outright vandalism -- new indulgences for strip-mining away mountain tops, new jeopardy for endangered species and so on. Political operatives who had been salted into sundry agencies have been switched into civil services jobs where... ( gunpolicy.org )

Mounties Seize 'Automatic' Assault Weapons from Licensed Gun Owner

Red Deer Advocate (Alberta)
10 Dec 2008

RCMP stopped a speeding SUV on Hwy 2 near Olds recently and uncovered a rolling arsenal of weapons, including three automatic assault rifles. Nine firearms and thousands of rounds of ammunition were recovered from the vehicle. Three of the weapons were stolen and several were illegal and modified. A suspect was arrested following the Dec. 2 incident and faces more than 30 weapons and drug charges. RCMP displayed a haul of high-powered weaponry, including a pair of AK-47s and an illegal semi-automatic handgun popularized by movie superspy James Bond, at the downtown detachment at a news conference Wednesday morning. In all, 14 weapons... ( gunpolicy.org )

Uganda Begins to Mark All Military Guns, Ammunition for Later Tracing

New Vision (Kampala)
10 Dec 2008

Small arms, light weapons and ammunition given to armed forces and civilians will be marked and electronically registered. Lt. Col. Fred Karara, the UPDF deputy inspector general of military equipment, said: "We are going to create a central database for all small arms, light weapons and ammunition in Uganda. We have received equipment from the Nairobi Regional Centre for Small Arms and Light Weapons to carry out the exercise." Karara is also the deputy manager of the National Focal Point on Small Arms and Light Weapons. He told journalists yesterday that the registration of weapons and ammunition was manually done, which made it difficult to... ( gunpolicy.org )

UK Grandmother 'Petrified' After Receiving Police Machine Gun in the Mail

Telegraph (UK)
10 Dec 2008

Catherine Roots had been expecting a horse harness in the post, instead she opened her package to find a Heckler & Koch black submachine gun. The package was delivered by a courier to Mrs Roots when it should have been sent to firearms officers at the nearby police headquarters. She called the station and two armed officers turned up and took it away. Police later explained a gun supply company made a mistake with the postcode when they sent it to Dorset Police in Winfrith near Dorchester. Instead of writing down DT2 8DZ a clerk put Mrs Roots' postcode of DT2 8DT on the package. Mrs Roots, who is aged in her 50s and runs a... ( gunpolicy.org )
