8 Year-old Arizona Boy Charged with Shooting, Killing Father and Friend

Sydney Morning Herald
10 Nov 2008

It's a crime that police officers in a small eastern Arizona community in the US can hardly fathom yet have to deal with: an eight-year-old has been charged with the fatal shootings of his father and another man. "Who would think an eight-year-old kid could kill two adults?" St Johns Police Chief Roy Melnick said. The crime that unfolded sent shock waves through St Johns, a community of about 4000 people north-east of Phoenix. The boy had no disciplinary record at school, and there was no indication he had any problems at home, prosecutors said. "It was such a tragedy," the boy's attorney, Benjamin Brewer, said. "You have two people dead; you... ( gunpolicy.org )

State Must Allow Seattle to Ban Hidden Handguns in Public Buildings

Seattle Post-Intelligencer, Editorial
10 Nov 2008

The mayor of Seattle and the attorney general disagree about the legality of the city's gun ban on public property. Attorney General Rob McKenna says state law "does pre-empt a city's authority to adopt firearms laws or regulations of application to the general public, unless specifically authorized by state law." However, Regina LaBelle, legal counsel to Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, told the P-I: "We always have to keep in mind not just state law but also federal laws. But our bottom line is that we want to have common-sense gun laws." We absolutely agree -- and think the Legislature should take this "case" up quickly and specifically authorize... Although more recent figures are not yet available, the spike in sales of rifles, handguns and semi-automatics began in the spring and surged in October. "Certainly the election has something to do with... ( gunpolicy.org )

Irish Times
10 Nov 2008

CHANTILLY, Virginia -- Earl Curtis's staff in the Blue Ridge Arsenal gunshop hurried to and fro on a Saturday afternoon coping with the rush of customers that has emerged in recent weeks since people realised that Barack Obama was heading to the White House. "The rush started about three weeks ago, and it hasn't stopped," Curtis tells The Irish Times . "People are afraid that we are about to go back to the days of the Clintons, except that it will be worse." The same sales peak is evident throughout the US -- in states such as New York and New Jersey with more restrictive gun laws to places like Colorado and Tennessee where curbs are light. During...
