Times of India

NEW DELHI -- A Gurgaon court on Thursday ordered an inquiry into Soha Ali Khan illegal gun licence case. The court has ordered an inquiry against Haryana police for concealing facts. Soha Ali Khan's gun was allegedly used by her father -- former cricketer Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi to kill a blackbuck in June 2005 in Haryana's Jhajjar district. Soha Ali Khan is accused of obtaining a gun license despite being under-age at the time. According to official records, Soha Ali Khan obtained an arms license for her POINT 22 bore rifle in November 1996, but she was not even 21 then, which is the legal age for obtaining a gun license. Campaign Targets Illinois Lawmakers Who Vote Against Gun Control
Daily Herald (Chicago)
8 May 2008
Postcards with a picture of a handgun and children as targets started appearing in mailboxes and on windshields in a few central Lake County towns this week. The postcards, distributed by representatives of the Brady Campaign, a national gun control advocacy group, criticize Republican state Rep. Sandy Cole of Grayslake for voting against legislation that would require background checks on all handgun sales. "She is against universal background checks," said Jennifer Bishop, Illinois Million Mom March national program director for victims and survivors while handing out leaflets Thursday outside Cole's Grayslake office. "This bill is an extra layer of... ( gunpolicy.org )

Fearing an 'Anti-gun' President, Rush of Texans Apply for Hidden Handguns
Houston Chronicle (Texas)
8 May 2008
AUSTIN -- Demand for concealed handgun licenses has risen nearly 40 percent in Texas in a year, an increase being attributed to many factors, even presidential politics. Though the exact cause may be unclear, what's certain is that the spike in applications has caught the Department of Public Safety unprepared. The state is taking a month longer than the 60 days allowed by law to process original applications and 80 days longer on renewals, which are supposed to be handled within 45 days. "We're trying really hard, but there have been delays because of the tremendous increase in applications," said Tela Mange, a DPS spokeswoman. She... ( gunpolicy.org )

Guns Are Not Christ's Way, Yet They Are America's Favorite Murder Weapon
Catholic Messenger (Iowa), Editorial

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- As the weather turns our Midwestern thoughts toward the pleasures of a day in the sun and outdoor fun, the news turns grim with mayhem caused by guns. Let's review just a few of this spring's incidents. Children out and about in Chicago have been shot with such frequency that Mayor Richard M. Daley called a crisis meeting of police and other city officials. Twenty-four children in the city have been killed by gunshot this school year. Now, in some neighborhoods, children walk to school only in large groups escorted by parents and other adults. In the Quad-Cities there were four shootings during one week in April. In one of... In Gunfights, Up to 87% of New York City Police Bullets Miss Their Target
New York Times
8 May 2008
New York City police officers fire their weapons far less often than they did a decade ago, a statistic that has dropped along with the crime rate. But when they do fire, even at an armed suspect, there is often no one returning fire at the officers. Officers hit their targets roughly 34 percent of the time. When they fire at dogs, roughly 55 percent of shots hit home. Most of their targets are pit bulls, with a smattering of Rottweilers and German shepherds. Officers' guns go off unintentionally or by accident for a variety of reasons: wrestling with suspects, cleaning the weapons, leaning on holsters -- even once, in 1996, when a gun was put in an...
