288 Assault Rifles, .50cals, 500,000 Rounds Seized from Mexican Cartel
McAllen Monitor (Texas)
7 Nov 2008
REYNOSA -- Mexican authorities came under attack Friday as they arrested the purported head of Gulf Cartel operations in Reynosa and tried to fly him out of the city, U.S. law enforcement officials said. Federal police found Jaime "El Hummer" González Durán just after 1:30 p.m. during raids on three buildings in and around the city. But as they drove him to the airport outside Reynosa, their convoy encountered several gunmen who opened fire on the federal officers. A brief shootout erupted between the two groups, but Mexican officials managed to put González on a plane to Mexico City, according to U.S. authorities who work for both federal... ( gunpolicy.org )

Disgraced Arms Dealer to US Sniper Killer Demands 'Right' to Deal Guns
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
7 Nov 2008
Considering his history, Brian Borgelt could be forgiven if he didn't give gun control advocates -- "anti-gun activists," in his words -- the time of day. The former owner of Bull's Eye Shooting Supply, Borgelt came to be viewed by many as the quintessential irresponsible gun shop operator after an assault rifle from his store ended up in the hands of the Beltway Snipers. The Tacoma store, correctly or not, became a symbol of the nation's flawed gun control system. Last month, though, Borgelt spent an unusual and unexpectedly pleasant afternoon with Ladd Everitt, a gun control supporter with the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence. After meeting... ( gunpolicy.org )

Government has allocated half a million US dollars for the payments with 1,726 people reportedly eligible for compensation. The Minister, Samuel Manetoali, says the scheme has helped take many dangerous weapons out of public reach. "There may be guns around. But what we are paying... ( gunpolicy.org )

Hunting Lobby Lures Canadian Women, Kids, City Folk to Kill with Guns
Globe & Mail (Toronto)
7 Nov 2008
With her manicured nails, Prada heels and slim 5-foot 9-inch figure, Kelly Miller can hold her own at any cocktail party. But this week the mother of four swapped her chai lattes for a Winchester rifle, matched wits against the wilds of Northern Alberta -- and caught a doe in the crosshairs for the first time. "I am really not sure who was more scared," she said in a text message from the bush. "Me or her." "Sex and the City meets cammo" is how the 31-year-old occupational health inspector describes herself. But, she admits, that's "not exactly the stereotype of what a hunter looks like." Or is it? Alarmed by the decline of... ( gunpolicy.org )

In Fear of 'Gun Snatcher' Obama, Americans Rush to Buy Firearms
New York Times
7 Nov 2008
DENVER -- Sales of handguns, rifles and ammunition have surged in the last week, according to gun store owners around the nation who describe a wave of buyers concerned that an Obama administration will curtail their right to bear arms. "He's a gun-snatcher," said Jim Pruett, owner of Jim Pruett's Guns and Ammo in northwest Houston, which was packed with shoppers on Thursday. "He wants to take our guns from us and create a socialist society policed by his own police force," added Mr. Pruett, a former radio personality, of President-elect Barack Obama. Mr. Pruett said that sales last Saturday, just before Election Day, ran about seven times higher... ( gunpolicy.org )

Licensing a Private Weapon, Guns for Self Defence Not an Option in Egypt
Daily News (Cairo)
7 Nov 2008
CAIRO -- Adel Abdel Maguid, 27, an accountant at an oil company, never imagined that he would ever need a gun to defend himself. What had started off as a vehement dispute with his landlord who wanted to evict him, gradually evolved into a potentially violent situation when, upon returning from work one day, he was warned by the gateman that four thugs were waiting at his flat to force him to sign a clearance document saying that he will voluntarily leave the apartment. "I simply needed a gun," he said. And that was when he learned that obtaining a licensed weapon for the purpose of self-defense is a near impossible feat. Officials... ( gunpolicy.org )

Seattle Mayor Plans Hidden Handgun Ban Despite Gun Lobby, State Law
Seattle Post-Intelligencer
7 Nov 2008
An unequivocal "no" from the state Attorney General's Office is often enough to shoot down a city proposal. Not so with a move by Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels to ban legally permitted handguns from city-owned parks and buildings, an effort that, if successful, could shatter a 47-year-old state prohibition against cities' regulation of firearms. The Mayor's Office continues to build a case for the ban despite an Oct. 14 opinion issued by Attorney General Rob McKenna's office arguing that the city cannot pre-empt state gun law. The mayor hopes to introduce an administrative order next month. "The cities are the ones on the front lines of this issue,"... ( gunpolicy.org )

With the money, the action plan will also conduct an awareness raising campaign for the general public and school children and a TV documentary on small arms and light weapons and the impact of gun crime on those who survive it. The activities of the focal point have lagged behind due to insufficient financial... ( gunpolicy.org )

Weapon Leak Feared in Blackwater's 'Improper' Gun Shipments to Iraq
CongressDaily (USA)
7 Nov 2008
Private security contractor Blackwater Worldwide, often a target of congressional Democrats, soon may face new legal problems. A grand jury in Washington is expected to decide soon whether to indict individual Blackwater guards involved in a widely publicized shooting incident in Baghdad last year, two people familiar with the investigation said. And the State Department's Directorate of Defense Trade Controls, which is responsible for export controls on some arms, is moving to hit the North Carolina-based firm with what could be millions of dollars in fines for shipping weapons to police training facilities in Iraq and Jordan without proper licensing, according...
