Another Shooter Kills Himself at a Licensed Gun Range, This Time in Florida

Daytona Beach News-Journal (Florida)
6 May 2008

HOLLY HILL -- Friends of Kevin J. McCarthy were looking for him for the past two days because they thought he might do something irrational. Monday afternoon, the 51-year-old walked into a shooting range on North Nova Road and after renting a handgun and firing 70 rounds at a practice target, he fatally shot himself in the temple, police said. "They thought he was going to do something crazy and they were looking for him," said Brett Miller, one of McCarthy's friends. Miller said McCarthy was taken into custody recently for a mental evaluation. Miller, sitting at the long wooden bar at The Crooks Den on Orange Avenue in Daytona Beach, has known... Assault Rifle Cop Killing, Easy Access to Guns Has Philadelphia Reeling

Philadelphia Inquirer (Pennsylvania), Editorial
6 May 2008

The cold-blooded killing of Philadelphia Police Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski is yet another sad reminder of the violence that rages on the streets, thanks to the easy access of guns and a disregard for human life. Sgt. Liczbinski should be celebrating his 40th birthday today with his wife and three children. Instead, his family is preparing for his funeral. Sgt. Liczbinski was gunned down Saturday while trying to stop a band of thugs fleeing from a harebrained bank robbery in Port Richmond. As he lay dying in the street, the 12-year police veteran from the Northeast reportedly said: "Tell my wife I'll miss her." The city of Philadelphia can't afford... ( gunpolicy.org )

Assault Rifle Cop Killing Reignites Gun Control Battle in Pennsylvania

Philadelphia Daily News (Pennsylvania)
6 May 2008

Nobody knows more about the gruesome carnage caused by five blasts from a Chinese-made SKS assault rifle than Thomas Krajewski Sr., the Port Richmond man who cradled Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski as the cop lay dying outside his home Saturday. That's why Krajewski can't believe that the gun is not outlawed in Philadelphia. "There is absolutely no reason that anyone should be carrying around military-style assault weapons," he said. "I mean, we saw what a weapon like that did to a human body. I mean, I own guns and my sons and I hunt as well, but I don't have assault rifles or anything. There's no need for it." Even with one of Liczbinski's three alleged... ( gunpolicy.org )

'Careless' Utah Police Chief Shot Himself While Teaching Gun Safety Class

Associated Press
6 May 2008

RIVERDALE, Utah -- The police chief who shot himself in the ankle was waving a loaded pistol and being careless, according to two students who were attending his class to qualify for a concealed-weapons permit. "We were told the gun is the chief's personal sidearm, but it looked to me like he didn't know anything about the gun," Lewis Walker said. Bart Ulm, another student seeking certification to carry a concealed weapon, said he was surprised Chief Dave Hansen was using a loaded gun to show how it worked. "Right then, I was very leery, because there's no need to have live ammo in a gun in the class. But I figured he's the chief, so he must know what... ( gunpolicy.org )

Global Gun Runner Bout 'Conspired to Kill Americans,' Says US Indictment

Associated Press
6 May 2008

NEW YORK -- Prosecutors announced an indictment Tuesday against a reputed Russian arms smuggler who they say tried to sell weapons to a U.S.-designated terrorist organization with the goal of killing Americans. Prosecutors said he was offering a deadly arsenal of weaponry: more than 700 surface-to-air missiles, thousands of guns, high-tech helicopters, and airplanes outfitted with grenade launchers... How Many Americans Must Die Before Gun Lobby Gets Message?

Philadelphia Daily News (Pennsylvania), Column
6 May 2008

The wounds deepen. The city reels from the murder of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski, and in the midst of it, there are more blows to our sensibilities: There's the sickening eruption of what looked like gratuitous violence when police arrested three men driving away from the scene of another shooting -- beating them and kicking them unmercifully, over and over, in a tableau of unchecked rage. There's the petty insensitivity of Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers, who balked at the mayor's order lowering flags to half-staff, arguing that only the governor or president can order flags lowered -- as if protocol mattered at this point. There's the continuing... ( gunpolicy.org )

Angola Press Agency (Luanda)
6 May 2008

MALANJE -- Northern Malanje Province governor Cristovao da Cunha on Monday here considered that the illegal possession of fire-arms can create constrains to the national reconciliation process among Angolans. The official was speaking at the opening of the provincial seminar on disarmament of civilians, having added that the illegal possession of weapons represents an individual and collective insecurity for Angolans. Associated Press

PHOENIX -- The arrest of a gun shop owner on Tuesday broke up a suspected firearms trafficking operation that supplied violent Mexican drug cartels, authorities said. Agents raided X Calibur Guns and arrested George Iknadosian after undercover agents bought guns at the store indicating they were to be trafficked to Mexico, said Carlos Baixauli, a special agent with the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Iknadosian, 46, knowingly sold at least 650 firearms, including high-end semiautomatic pistols and assault-style rifles, to drug cartels, the ATF said. The investigation began 11 months ago after some guns involved in crimes... ( gunpolicy.org )

Push to Allow Loaded Guns in US National Parks Should Be Shot Down

Christian Science Monitor, Editorial
6 May 2008

Pressured by the gun lobby and 51 US senators, the Interior Department proposes enhancing everyone's national park experience by letting people pack heat with a picnic. That's just what the nation's millions of park visitors don't need. Last week, Interior put out for public comment a rule that would allow people with concealed-weapons permits to carry loaded guns in national parks and wildlife refuges. Forty-eight states grant such licenses. The rule only applies if the park or refuge is located in a state that allows concealed guns in its parks. Rules banning gun use go back decades for some parks and were put in place to prevent poaching and ensure... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Firearm Laws Change Quickly as State Legislators Ride With Gun Lobby

Palm Beach Post (Florida)
6 May 2008

If the gun lobby has its way, you'll be able to be locked and loaded virtually anywhere in America, from parks to schools. If gun control advocates have theirs, law-abiding citizens will continue to be helpless prey for murderers, rapists and thieves. Now that Florida and Georgia have joined six other states with "bring your gun to work" laws, expect to hear these arguments more often as the two sides spar over just how far the Founding Fathers meant to go with the right to bear arms. The debate is likely to get even more heated now that the U.S. Department of the Interior is proposing a rule change that would allow visitors to carry loaded... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Gun Shop 'Knowingly and Willingly' Sold Assault Rifles to Mexican Gangs

ABC News (USA)
6 May 2008

Just hours after receiving a shipment of weapons allegedly intended for Mexican drug bosses, a Phoenix gun dealer and at least two alleged arms traffickers were arrested this morning in a series of raids by federal and local authorities. Authorities say the gun dealer sold more than 650 AK-47-type assault weapons to Mexican drug gangs responsible for recent shootouts that have claimed dozens of lives. Sources in Phoenix, Ariz., told ABC News the raids are part of a continued effort to curb the supply of high-quality weapons from the U.S. to Mexico. Those weapons -- including high-powered assault rifles and "cop killer" handguns -- are often bought through "straw... ( gunpolicy.org )
