For 1 Obama Vote, US 'Gun Lobby Attack Dogs' Destroy 38 of Their Own

New West (Montana), Column
3 Nov 2008

Something extremely scary happened last Friday on Halloween. Dan Cooper, President and Founder of Cooper Firearms of Stevensville, Montana, resigned. Not so scary, you say. Well, wait until you hear why. If you believe in freedom and that there's a reason why the right to free speech is the First Amendment, prepare to be terrified. The uproar erupted on October 28 when USA TODAY published an article interviewing Cooper. In the story, he said he has voted Republican most of his life, but this year, he's voting for (and making campaign contributions to) Barrack Obama. Cooper thinks the gun lobby's relentless attacks on the Democratic nominee are unfounded... ( gunpolicy.org )

Star (Johannesburg)

A policeman is being sought after he allegedly shot and killed four people in KwaZulu Natal. Police Superintendent Vincent Mdunge on Sunday said the sergeant, who is in his 40s, had been off-duty at the time of the shooting. "The man, who is based at Hillcrest police station, went to a residence at Shongweni, just outside Hillcrest, on Saturday. "He called out an occupant of the house. Other people in the house became suspicious and went outside to see what the policeman wanted. The officer then opened fire on the group. All the occupants of the house were unarmed." Three people died at the scene. A fourth person died in hospital on... ( gunpolicy.org )

Plan to Re-arm Australian State Police with 10,000 Handguns is Delayed

Age (Melbourne)
3 Nov 2008

The plan to re-arm police with semi-automatic guns is behind schedule as senior officers admit they will not meet the initial target of completing the weapons upgrade by the end of the year. Although the State Government has committed $10 million for the new weapons, the falling Australian dollar means that costs have blown-out by at least 30%. When Chief Commissioner Christine Nixon announced the firearm upgrade in June, she said it would be conducted over a six-month timetable. International gun manufacturers Glock, Smith and Wesson, Heckler & Koch and Taurus have indicated they want to bid for the contract, but the first stage of the tender... ( gunpolicy.org )

Singaporeans Tried to Smuggle US Guns to Sri Lanka, Landed in Jail

Straits Times (Singapore)
3 Nov 2008

A Singaporean who tried to buy American weapons for Sri Lankan rebels, but got snagged in a sting operation, has been jailed for 37 months by a Baltimore court in the United States. Haniffa Osman, 57, pleaded guilty to the charges and was also sentenced by US District Judge Catherine Blake to three years' supervision on his release. She said that of the three men who conspired to help the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers procure arms through agent T. Varatharasa, Haniffa was the most culpable. The former cleaning supervisor, who has been in detention since his arrest two years ago on the Pacific island of Guam, is expected to complete his term next year.... ( gunpolicy.org )

Texas 2nd Amendment Guy on Wife's .50cal Shooting: 'There is a Limit'

Dallas Morning News (Texas)
3 Nov 2008

A stray bullet struck a woman in her camper Sunday morning at Texas Motor Speedway. The .50-caliber bullet pierced the roof of Jill King Moss's RV, hit her arm and lodged in a wall. The bullet's trajectory indicated that it came from a long distance away, Fort Worth police told WFAA-TV (Channel 8). Her husband, Melvin Moss, said Monday that his wife was in good condition at Harris Methodist Fort Worth Hospital. "She will not lose her arm. Her spirits are up. She has a lengthy recovery," he said. "A few inches one way or the other and she wouldn't be here with us." The Arlington couple had parked their RV at the speedway... ( gunpolicy.org )

Utah Checks Hidden Handgun Permit Holders for Crime, Revokes 568

Salt Lake Tribune (Utah)
3 Nov 2008

Scores of concealed weapon permit holders were able to carry their guns for months after they should have had their licenses suspended or revoked for crimes ranging from unspecified felonies to drunken driving. The problem wasn't fixed until the second half of 2007 when the state Bureau of Criminal Identification received a budget hike and hired four additional investigators. Those new staffers helped the agency to clear a huge backlog of shelved enforcement actions. The result was a dramatic spike in revocations and suspensions of concealed-carry permits. They jumped from 167 in 2006 to 568 in 2007. The extra staff also sent permit application... ( gunpolicy.org )
