AK-47 Killed US Halloween 12yr-old: 'No Harder to Get than Other Guns'
WLTX-TV News (South Carolina)
2 Nov 2008
SUMTER -- Gun officials say the gun police say a 22-year-old used to kill a 12-year-old Friday night is no harder to get than any other gun. Tony's Gun and Police Supply owner Tony Ashy says anyone over the age of 18 with a clean record can purchase a gun. But the misconception about the gun and its intimidation factor doesn't come from dealers like him. "People, when they hear AK-47, right away they go to what they see in the movies or on the news, spraying bullets," says Ashy. In fact, it's illegal for anyone to own a fully automatic weapon in the United States that would spray bullets like in the movies, Ashy says. Sumter... ( gunpolicy.org )

Gun Amnesty Expires as Few Pay to Register Firearms in Philippines
Cebu News
2 Nov 2008
CEBU -- Gun owners have until November 14, 2008 to register their firearms with the Philippine National Police, as the one year amnesty period for loose or unlicensed firearms also ends on that day pursuant to Executive Order No. 585-A. However, homemade guns or those known as "paltik" guns are not qualified for registration, said SPO3 Zenaido Sanches of the Firearms, Explosive and Security Agencies/Guards Supervisory Section. Zenaido said their office will only accept turn-in firearms should the owners willingly surrender the same without any liability on their part. Low-powered firearms such as caliber 38, Caliber 22, 9 MM pistol and shotgun... ( gunpolicy.org )

Gun Owners Spend Less, But Still Go Hunting in Tight US Economy
Associated Press
2 Nov 2008
PIERRE, South Dakota -- Have gun, will travel -- even if the economy's shot. In the heart of South Dakota's pheasant-hunting country, license sales have been strong this fall despite gasoline prices near $3 a gallon and a looming recession. Ditto for hunting license sales in New York, Utah and Colorado. The leading retailers of outdoor gear, meanwhile, say sales of shotguns, ammunition and warm camouflage clothes aren't too bad considering the economy's headwinds. Hunting's popularity has waned slightly in recent years, and American families are tightening their belts as a recession looms, but businesses catering to hunters say the sport's outlook remains... Obama Fear 'Ploy' as Gun Dealers Scare Americans Into Buying Firearms
Augusta Chronicle (Georgia) / Morris News Service
2 Nov 2008
COLUMBIA -- New concealed-weapon permit applications in South Carolina increased nearly 55 percent through the end of August, compared with the same period last year. New requests totaled 11,777, a sizable jump from the eight-month period last year, when 7,618 applications were made to the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. To Gerald Stoudemire, the reason is clear. The president of Gun Owners of South Carolina says many people are concerned Barack Obama will erode Second Amendment rights if he wins the presidency. "This is the information we are hearing from our customers and students," said Mr. Stoudemire, who owns a gun shop.... ( gunpolicy.org )

US Actress's Family Handgun Twice Stolen, Used to Kill 3 in Chicago
Chicago Tribune
2 Nov 2008
Forensic testing determined that the chrome-and-black .45-caliber pistol recovered by Chicago police was the weapon used to kill Jennifer Hudson's mother, brother and nephew, a law-enforcement source said Friday. The gun, discovered Wednesday a block from where 7-year-old Julian King's body was found, was being tested in the hope of finding evidence that would tie the killings to a suspect, police said. Police also are investigating whether the weapon had once belonged to Hudson's slain brother, Jason. He allegedly owned an identical gun that he thought was stolen from the family's Englewood home a few months ago, according to law-enforcement sources... ( gunpolicy.org )
