A senior clergyman from the Mendi Catholic Diocese has appealed to the public and Catholics especially to begin a prayer campaign for peace and the surrender of guns. Bishop Steve said following the recent surrendering of guns, there were rumors that other groups around the province were considering surrendering guns. He said there seemed to be momentum building in the province to remove guns from the community and people could help strengthen that with their prayers. He called on the public to use community and private prayer before the "Blessed Sacrament, the Rosary" and prayer in processions and other forms of prayer for the intention. ... ( gunpolicy.org )

NORFOLK, Virginia -- Eighteen people have been arrested on charges related to an alleged gun-buying scheme that brought easily purchased Virginia handguns to New York City streets. The 18 were among 26 men and women named in an 87-count federal indictment that was unsealed Monday in U.S. District Court in Norfolk. Authorities were seeking the other eight suspects. All are charged with one or more counts of conspiracy to make false statements on a firearm purchase and making a false statement to purchase a firearm. WEST PALM BEACH, Florida -- The judge in a landmark gun trial overturned the jury's $1.2 million verdict Monday, calling it "fatally inconsistent." Circuit Judge Jorge Labarga's reversal of the verdict against gun distributor Valor Corp. is a huge setback for Pam Grunow, the widow of a teacher killed at Lake Worth Middle School on the last day of school in 2000. A jury of six women on Nov. 14 found Valor partially liable saying it was negligent in distributing the.25 caliber handgun without safety devices. RAROTONGA -- Another murder has occurred in the Cook Islands, four months after a woman was found dead in her home. Police are treating the discovery of a deceased male body on the Rarotonga Golf Course in Nikao yesterday morning as' suspicious.' Police Commissioner Pira Wichman said police were conducting a homicide investigation into the discovery of the body of a 21-year-old male. A large shipment of contraband firearms was discovered over the weekend in a container aboard a Panama-registered cargo ship at Kaohsiung Harbor, prosecutors said yesterday. Acting on a tipoff, investigators intercepted the Consistence after the container vessel arrived at Kaohsiung Harbor from the Philippines Saturday evening. SANFORD -- A Seminole County deputy sheriff may have used his department-issued gun to kill his ex-wife and then commit suicide early Monday, while four children slept in another part of the woman's home, police said. Awakened by the gunfire, a 12-year-old boy dialed 911 about 12:15 a.m. and asked a dispatcher to send an ambulance. "My mom and dad are dead," he said. Two months after a jury gave gun control advocates a major victory, a South Florida judge took it away Monday, tossing out a $1.2 million award to the widow of a slain schoolteacher. In an unusual split verdict, the jury found in November that the handgun used by 12-year-old Nathaniel Brazill to kill Barry Grunow was not a defective product, but that the Sunrise-based gun distributor still had to pay Pam Grunow to compensate her for the loss of her husband.
